Charity News: July 2019 Roundup

Below, we take a look at the top charity news stories of July, keeping you in the loop of the latest going on in the third sector!

Third Sector Awards: Shortlist Revealed

Here at BidAid, we are always eager to sing the praises of worthwhile charities; non-profits and social enterprises that are activity making a positive difference to the world we live in.

This is why we are thrilled to see the shortlist of the Third Sector Awards revealed, noticing some wonderful organisations we have worked with making the cut.

The Third Sector Awards celebrates those championing in the third sector, rewarding organisations as well as the businesses supporting them.

Diabetes UK, the National Trust, Anthony Nolan and environmental campaigning charity, Hubbub, are among those shortlisted.

Emily Burt, deputy editor of Third Sector, said: "The standard of entries was exceptionally high this year. It’s great to see such a diverse collection of charities in the mix. We wish you all the best of luck on the awards night."

Instagram launches fundraising stickers

Just this week, Instagram announced the launch of its donation sticker feature. This is a feature that permits users to add a sticker onto their Instagram stories that processes payments for charities.

This comes following the success of Facebook’s fundraising tool; a tool that has helped raise over $1bn for causes across the world.

Plus, there couldn’t be a better time for Instagram to be in the headlines for something positive, having been connected with stories of bullying, political propaganda and dangerous influence for many months now.

New minister for civil society announced

There have been many changes in cabinet this month. Just this week, we learn that the UK has appointed a new Minister for Civil Society, Baroness Barran. Working within the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Barran boasts extensive experience in the third sector, having previously run the domestic abuse charity, SafeLives. This is in addition to the work she carried out with New Philanthropy Capital (NPC).

While many recent changes to parliament have divided us in opinion, most UK charities have welcomed this change.

Google Partners with paralysis charity

Technology giants, Google, has this week announced details of their partnership with paralysis charity, Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

Wanting to enhance its CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) policy, Google have given away 100,000 of its voice-activated Google Home devices.

Paralympic athlete and ambassador for the charity Garrison Redd, explains how these devices will enrich the lives of those that receive them.

He says: “When you’re paralysed, your home goes from being a place of comfort and security to a reminder of what you’ve lost. Light switches and thermostats are usually too high up on the wall and, if my phone falls on the floor, I may not be able to call a friend or family member if I need help.”

“I’ve been using mine for a few months, and it’s helped me control my environment, gain more independence, and have a little fun—all with my voice.”
